Pharmacists and health disparities – time for a text for pharmacy students

“What Pharmacists Need to Know About Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities”, a text for use in public health, health disparities, health services research, epidemiology and related courses for pharmacy students in their second, third, and fourth years of training.

Teaching is the first step in preparing the next generation of pharmacists to address racial and ethnic health disparities. MIE Resources initiated this project to provide educational materials tailored to pharmacists concerned about health disparities.

Pharmacists have a role in eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities

This text will increase students’ understanding of the nature and origins of racial and ethnic health disparities, and help pharmacy students understand their role in eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities by:

  • Discussing the concepts of race and ethnicity and the constructs used to classify and categorize them
  • Providing an overview of the data collected regarding disparities in mortality, morbidity, provision of health care, and other health indicators
  • Describing epidemiologic studies of mechanisms and pathways
  • Addressing racial and ethnic health disparities that occur in real-world pharmacy care, such as differences in disease conditions, response to medication, access to care, health literacy, and cultural attitudes towards health and medications
